On Sunday 8th March we are having one of our Community Sermons at Ashley.
This is a way of describing a service where as many people as possible take part coming ready to say something short on the given topic. This time it is on 'Men and Women of the Bible and the Holy Spirit' and I rather rashly suggested some might come with a limerick on the subject (and maybe write one of their own). I found 'The Bible in Limerick Verse' on the internet which I will try to get hold of and bring along.
Having searched the internet I have realised that good Christian limericks are not easy to write. Just as a start here is one from a website. The limerick is called The Buyers Remorse based on the story of Jeremiah buying a field as an act of faith when he knew the Babylonians are about to capture the city (Jeremiah 32:24-25).
Under siege, yet You told me to buy
Real estate. Seemed like pie-in-the-sky.
Then You said, "I am God,
Jer’ don’t think like a clod.
Now I’ll help you to understand why.
Maybe not the best but it is not that easy. To help us are there any offers via the blog? Ones you have found or written.......

oh well...here goes......
To Moses, the rod and the snake
did not a 'great plan' seem to make
He couldn't agree
that it should be he
this extraordinary message to take
Eventually Jonah concurred
And went to deliver God’s word
And as he had known
Compassion was shown
And the people were saved when they heard
Thanks Sue I think your two are excellent. Since I started this and Sue has been brave I better have a go:
There was a loose woman from Samaria
Whose life could not be contrary-er!
Jesus told her the truth
Sent her life through the roof
And her story changed the whole area
Mine's a bit mischievous!
There was in the Garden of Eden
A Man blessed with fruit-eating freedom.
God gave him one rule,
The Man was a fool
And said, "My way's better; I'll do that instead!"
Thought I should join in as well with an insight to tomorrows talk
There once was a woman from Samaria
Whose husbands did not really care for her
She went down to the well
Heard what Jesus had to tell
And now her outlook is much merrier
A blind man who sat by a gate
Many years had been forced to wait
Then along came a guy
Who made a mud pie
And restored sight was now his new fate.
There once was a man Nicodemus
Who tried not to cause such a big fuss
He sneaked off in the night
Met a carpenter by sight
And now has a saviour called Jesus
I think limerick writing could become addictive! They seem to compose themselves whilst you're about your daily chores!
There was a young woman named Ruth
Who somehow grasped hold of this truth:
When everything's gone,
God's still holding on,
Preparing the way from your youth.
My friend Paul wrote these for us.......
If we all turn to Jesus as saviour
And change our outrageous behaviour
Then the message is clear;
The Spirit is here
And if you will let Him, He'll change ya!
When the great day of Pentecost came
The Disciples, without any shame,
All spoke in tongues
At the top of their lungs
And they said "That's the Spirit again"
An apostle of Jesus, named Paul
Had once used the moniker 'Saul.'
On the road to Damascus
Christ set him a task as
He sent him to preach to us all.
An Easter thought
Jesus came to the Earth for the lost
And paid the greatest and terrible cost
But all was okay
He rose on the third day
And the devil then knew he was bossed
Yes it is addictive. I like the way it makes me think about the meaning of stories I have heard so many times. They are like sermons in 5 seconds! So here we go again:
A widow gave all she that she had
Made Jesus rejoice and be glad
Anonymous philanthropy
A gift only He could see
Made all the 'show offs' seem sad
last minute additions
King David was smitten from on high
When nude Beth in her garden did spy
He commited great sin
Uriah was done in
And God said you will live with that lie
Joe was proud of his beautiful coat
But his brothers did a deed with a goat(!)
They didn't behave
Sold him off as a slave
But then had to listen to him gloat
